The Indy 500, which gets underway Sunday at 12:45 p.m., will air on NBC for the first time in the race’s 103-year history. ABC had been airing the event since 1965, but was outbid for the rights by NBC, which already had the television rights to the IndyCar Series.
Matt Iseman and Akbar Gbajabiamila, host of “American Ninja Warriors,” will serve as the grand marshall and will call drivers to report to their cars at 12:38 p.m. ET. Actors Matt Damon and Christian Bale share the role of honorary starters and will wave the green flag.
RACE DISTANCE: 200 laps around the 2.5-mile track for a total of 500 miles.
TV: NBC. Pre-race broadcast begins at 11 a.m. ET.

Calling his first Indy 500 will be Leigh Diffey, the affable Australian native who has been the voice of NBC’s IndyCar coverage since 2013. During his 23-year broadcasting career, Diffey has called everything from the Olympics to professional rugby, and his first assignment after joining NBC Sports was calling the Penn Relays on NBCSN.
LAST TIME: Will Power started third and outpaced pole winner Ed Carpenter by 3.159 seconds to win his first Indy 500 and the 17th for team owner Roger Penske. Scott Dixon, who went on to win the 2018 IndyCar championship — his fifth in series history – finished third.
